• Not a Resolution, a 2010 Goal – Work Less Hours

    Posted on December 26th, 2009 7 comments

I admit, I don’t like the concept of new years resolutions. I figure, why does someone have to wait until January 1 to say they’ll start a new project, start exercising, stop eating junk food and so on. I just don’t get it! To me, it’s a sign of weakness.

The best time to start something new was yesterday, but if that didn’t happen, then start today. As you know, most people don’t carry through on their new years resolutions for long anyway!

So whilst this isn’t a resolution of sorts, I do have a goal I will achieve in 2010. It’s a simple one.

I will work LESS hours on my online business in 2010

    To be more specific:

I will work no more than 4 hours per day on my online business in 2010

Why do I want to do that?

Currently I have all day to sit at the computer and work. And we all know where that leads – distractions, surfing, reading forums and blogs, facebook, youtube etc etc etc – the procrastination list goes on and on.

So I will be working for a solid 3-4 hours each weekday morning. There will be no Facebook, no blogs, no forums and no chatting. Just work. I’ll have a list of tasks to complete each day and even if I work only 2 hours, I would have got more done than in 8 hours of inattentive “work” time on the computer.

Whilst I’m usually pretty good at getting things done normally, there’s room for improvement and I hope this will take my productivity to that next level! Oh, and leave plenty of free time for doing more fun stuff like taking my dog to the beach, learning how to cook decently, and maybe even getting back into going to the gym (might be pushing it there though LOL).

So I’ll keep you update on how this pans out, and whether I feel I’m getting more done in 3-4 hours than I currently do in 7-10 hours on the computer each day.

Let me know if you have any goals you plan to achieve in 2010, I’d love to hear them.

    • Hey Rebecca,

What kind of CPA offers do you promote? Do you do email and zip promotes with your affiliate blogs? Do you work mainly with one CPA network or do you find a niche and then use a site like Offervault.com to find a product to promote?

      • All of the above – keeping an open mind and being willing to try anything brings the best results. There is no one right way ;)

    • If I’m building one or two blogs a day would you recommend that I find a theme that I really like or should I change themes as frequently as possible? What do you think?

    • Rebecca,

Also, I’ve been using a static page as my “home page” instead of just having blog posts. Do you think this could damage my chances of ranking in the SERPS? Thanks.

    • Every page has the same chance of ranking high – you just need to build links to each page, while also working on your internal linking structure.

Concerning your theme question… personally I get bored using the same theme so I like to mix it up. But the theme is something I don’t concentrate much on at all in the first few months, I generally just choose one of the latest ones in the wordprses admin Add New Themes page (under the Newest or Featured links, this pulls them straight from the official WordPress themes database).

    • Rebecca,

Thanks so far for all of the information. I had another quick question. What type of blog structure do you use? Do you use 1 post per page? Or 5 posts? 10?

    • I didn’t see your last comment William, sorry.

I don’t stick to any one structure or layout for my blogs. Some have just a few pages while others have hundreds. Remaining flexible and viewing each blog as it’s own entity is the way to go.
